This is amazingly cool. If I can make one observation though, it would be to see if you can tweak his cheeks a little bit, the line of shadow accross them is a bit too horizontal, and should probably dig into the eye sockets a bit more?

Cymae, thanks for taking the time to pull together those references, I appreciate the feedback and the examples. If I bring in this poor kid for another image I'll take a close look at both the curvature of his cheeks and the specific angle of the lightsource.
